Understanding Drug Addiction

Understanding the mechanics of drug addiction is quite difficult except maybe for those who have experienced drug addiction firsthand. Most people have this misunderstanding that all drug or alcohol addicts need to do to overcome their addiction problems is simply to just stop with the drinking and drug using.

The truth of the matter however is that it is never that simple, not even for individuals with incredible reserves of will power who have seen their lives fall apart around them as results of their drug addiction. Alcohol and drug addiction in general can and does happen to anyone, irrespective of social status, level of education or gender. Creating an environment of understanding on why they are so deep into drug and substance use is the first step in helping loved ones overcome their addiction problem.

The reasons different people get into alcohol and drug use may vary depending on their circumstances. One of the reasons being people resolve to using drugs is to get some closure or as a means to getting some self-medicating feeling of relief from social anxiety, stress, insecurity and at times even physical pain. Other drug users prefer using drugs and alcohol for recreational purposes.

This is where we find most first time users getting into drug use due to peer pressure from either their families or friends. Whatever the reasons are, any drug user is easily vulnerable to drug addiction under different circumstances because drug addiction is both a mental and physical disease that occurs from repeated use of drugs.

Understanding Drug Addiction

First Stage of Drug Addiction can be termed as tolerance stage. It is at this stage that drug user’s central nervous systems make adjustments to the body that ease the effects of the used drugs, after they have been used over some duration of time consistently. These adjustments made by the central nervous system lead to the development of tolerance where drug users will more often than not, need to take in more of these substances into their system for them to achieve the same high feeling from drug use.

The Second Stage of Drug Addiction is known as physical dependence stage. Drug users get to this stage after using said drugs on a regular basis for quite some time such that the adjustments made by the central nervous system become semi-permanent. At this state the users’ bodies can only operate normally when they have drug substances in their systems. When drug users suddenly stop using these drugs or withdrawal from using these drugs, it results in a detox commonly known as withdrawal symptoms.

This will mean that the drug users’ central nervous systems will have to make drastic adjustments for their bodies to adapt to the changes. Stopping of drug addiction in some cases ends up being very dangerous to the drug user and it is because of this that drug addicts wanting to put a stop to their drug using habit are advised to do so in medically equipped facilities, especially those who have progressed past tolerance to the physical dependence stage and have become addicts.

Patients suffering from drug addiction all exhibit the same features other than just being physically dependent on drugs. The person goes through some emotional, physical and mental problems among other conditions that can be extremely debilitating. Generally, once physical dependence has set in, there are three behaviors exhibited by people with cases of drug usage that can be used to determine drug addiction.

  1. Addicts have no control over their drug intake.
  2. Addicts obsess over using the drugs and can rarely stop thinking or talking about using drugs.
  3. Despite negative effects that accompany drug addiction such as significant financial issues, job loss and even the breakup of one’s family, drug users cannot stop using the drugs.

Drug addiction patients can always get help from the various drug rehab centers, which provide secure environments for the patients with trained counselors who will see to it that they take charge of their lives.
